A Note From Father Rob

Pre-COVID, many people at St. James were part of a shared feeding ministry with others at the First United Methodist Church (now Cornerstone Methodist Church). When the pandemic struck, the ministry came to an abrupt end. That’s when a few folks at St. James got the idea for Soup to Go.

Soup to Go (StG) is our feeding ministry here at St. James. Each Tuesday, one of six teams gather in our downstairs kitchen to prepare soup and sandwiches. The soup can be any one of several varieties, including potato, tomato bisque or even stew. The sandwiches range from pimento to ham and cheese or peanut butter and jam – and we always include a bag of chips.

Though we usually average about 100 to 120 people served in our parking lot on any given Tuesday, we served 169 meals with a short-handed team on March 25. While the number of people coming to StG varies from week to week, with more coming toward the end of the month, this was an unprecedented number. This number of people coming on one night may be an anomaly; the last time we had an unusually high number it was, but time will tell.

I want to thank not only our folks who served last Tuesday, but also everyone who serves on any of our six StG teams – from those who make soup and sandwiches and pack brown paper bags inside to those who pass the bags to hungry folks in the drive-thru parking lot outside. The fellowship of each team is a reward unto itself. If you think you might be called to get involved in and serve with your fellow parishioners, just let me know or contact our parish office.

Stay hungry, my friends. Rob+
