A Note From Father Rob

Preparing for Sunday services this week, I pondered what prayers we might use to recognize the occasion of Mother’s Day. I could not help but let my thoughts wonder into memories of my own mother.

Born in 1923, Lorraine Gloria Davenport was raised by her grandparents, a stern couple who lived in Vancouver, British Columbia. She left home in 1941, when she turned 18, to join the Royal Canadian Air Force and serve her country in WWII. It was there, on a navel air base in Nova Scotia, that my mother and father met. That was how our family began.

By the time I was born, they had moved to Southern California with their three young daughters. My mother was the rock of our family. Her love for her husband and children was the constant in all of our lives. It was her character that formed and molded us all into the people we are today.

I remember her fondly, as I’m sure most of you remember your own. If you have the opportunity to speak to her this Sunday, tell her how much you love her and appreciate who she is, and all she has done. If you no longer have that opportunity, join me in prayers and remembrances for our mothers who have passed.

May we all come to be joined in eternal life together, rejoicing in the love of God. Amen.
