Remembrances…
At the end of the calendar year, during the Christmas season, my husband and I have a tradition of writing an annual letter, sharing a few remembrances from the year just past. My French literature creeps into my brain as I reflect on Marcel Proust’s A la Recherche du Temps Perdu, Remembrances of Things Past (or In Search of a Lost Time).
I prefer to see the remembrances as gifts, not as time lost.
The remembrances of joy and sorrow form the very fabric of our lives and of our relationships.
If we live into the Hebrew meaning of “Remember”, zakar, we know that it is not just memory that holds us. “Remember” implies action. How shall we honor this memory today and always?
God wants us to remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. Honor the day of rest so we can be energized to go out to love and serve.
Jesus says when we take the bread and wine at communion, “Do this in remembrance of me.” Be fed with the sacrificial love of Jesus so we can go out to offer that love to all.
So as we begin a new calendar year and a new liturgical year, may our remembrances guide us along a meaningful path of God’s love in action.
Christmas Blessings and Happy New Year,
