Saint Thomas the Apostle

It is fitting on December 21, the winter solstice, the shortest and darkest day of the year, that we commemorate Saint Thomas the Apostle.

We know him as “Doubting Thomas” as he wanted proof of Jesus’ resurrection. His doubt, though, was not disbelief, but rather a seeking for a deeper faith. His skepticism led to a firm acknowledgement of his faith and belief: “My Lord and my God!”

Thomas was ever the seeker. In the Gospel of John, after Jesus describes his preparation of a place for us with many rooms, Thomas asks “Lord, how can we know the way?” His important question leads to Jesus’ profound affirmation: “I am the way, the truth, and the life…”.

How often are we the ones who question, who may be in the dark, seeking the light of Christ? Living the questions can deepen our faith as we open ourselves to the Way of Jesus, the Way of Love.

Thomas gave us the gift of questioning, permission for us doubters, skeptics, and wonderers to seek a deeper understanding of the mystery of God’s perfect love.

Thomas truly walked the Way of Love, spreading the light of Christ as a missionary to India, where the Mar Thoma Church is ever present even to this day.

May we be reassured by Thomas’ example, that our skepticism, doubt, and questioning will lead to a profound deepening of our faith in Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Let us pray the prayer of Saint Thomas the Apostle:

Everliving God, who strengthened your apostle Thomas with firm and certain faith in your Son’s resurrection: Grant us so perfectly and without doubt to believe in Jesus Christ, our Lord and our God, that our faith may never be found wanting in your sight; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Advent Blessings,
