Labor Day Weekend: A Time to Rest from our Labors

The Compline service in our Book of Common Prayer includes Jesus’ comforting words from Matthew 11:

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

The Holy Eucharist Rite I service includes the King James translation of this verse:

“Come unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you.” (Matthew 11:28)

Labor Day Weekend gives us permission to set aside our “work”, our paid jobs or our volunteer jobs.

But the truth is, we often continue our work, especially when the unexpected happens.

The sudden straight line winds on Thursday caused upheaval in Alexander City - damaged buildings, power outages, blocked roads.

St. James’ Care Teams went straight to work, checking on folks in the path of the storm. City workers and utility workers went into high gear to address the immediate problems. Much work will be needed for long-term recovery.

The beauty of this scripture from Matthew is that Jesus joins us in our work and eases every burden we may face.

Andrew Young, United Church of Christ Ordained Minister, former Congressman, Ambassador, and Mayor, entitled his book An Easy Burden. The book chronicles the Civil Rights Movement and his involvement in it. The journey was at times rough and difficult, but centered in the love of Jesus, he found it an easy burden to bear. It was a labor of love to help pave the path for liberty and justice for all.

May we find some rest for our souls this Labor Day weekend. May Jesus continue to refresh us. And when work must be done, may we remember that Jesus is ever with us.

God’s peace,
